An
Internet search engine is a complex online application
that searches for data in various different forms across
the Internet. It records, organizes, and categorizes
information so that Internet search engine users can
type in a keyword term into the search field in order
to find relevant data on the subject matter they are
inquiring about. Internet search engines utilize their
own proprietary search engine algorithms that record
or "index" and compile information in different
ways. Internet search engine indexing agents such as
crawlers, robots and spiders, are information recording
entities that literally scan websites, web pages, web
directories, and almost any type of media on the Internet
to constantly update their index in order to supply the
most fresh, useful and relevant information to its search
engine users.
Internet search engine algorithms are what make one
search engine "better" than another, in a user's
perspective and opinion. Additionally, some Internet
search engines are custom tailored to a specific use,
such as Froogle, which is specifically utilized for Internet
shopping, whereas its cousin Google is designated for
general Internet search queries. The Google search engine
is the most widely used Internet search engine today,
attributed mostly to their propriety algorithm and page
rank system. Google integrates a one-of-a-kind page rank
system which organizes and compiles information based
on content’s calculated value from indexing, along with
a unique democratic virtual voting system, which collects
"votes" from websites, web pages and web directories
that deem a particular website or web page valuable in terms
of information usefulness and relevancy.
